GP15-1 Keep-alive installation

Installation of a keep-alive device on the BC&W GP15-1

Step-by-step installation of a keep-alive in an Athearn Genesis GP15-1. I purchased a Soundtraxx CurrentKeeperā„¢ item no. 810140 to provide keep-alive capabilities to the Tsunami2 decoder.

The Tsunami2 has a dedicated plug for connecting the CurrentKeeper, which is very convenient.

Unfortunately, while the CurrentKeeper can provide power for almost ten seconds, it is quite large. I could not fit it under the shell.

TCS KA1-P To The Rescue

The TCS KA1-P keep-alive device is much smaller and has a compatible plug that connects directly to the Tsunami2 decoder.

Because of its smaller size, it provides power for about two to three seconds when the locomotive runs with lights and sound on. However, that is enough to overcome dirty spots on the track.

Then, I secured the keep-alive with a piece of Kapton tape and reassembled the shell. Below is a short video showing the keep-alive performance test.

Once patched for the Buffalo Creek & Western Railroad, this locomotive will work alongside the BC&W GP9 equipped with an ESU decoder.

Keep-alives definitely add to the enjoyment of running trains without interruptions. easily overcoming dirty track spots that could otherwise take away from the experience.
