Tangent HO scale covered hopper extreme weathering technique
I wanted to try a more extreme weathering approach on this Tangent HO scale covered hopper. First, I applied an initial rust layer with Vallejo acrylic paints. Then, I airbrushed a few light coats of acrylic paint to build up dust on the lower areas.
Afterwards, I focused on the heavier rust effects using oil paints. Their long drying time gave me plenty of control and allowed me to blend the colors gradually. The process took several days, but the extra time was well worth the effort.
The result is a heavily weathered car that looks like it has spent many years in hard service. Here is a video showing the whole weathering process.
