Grain-related structures like grain bins and elevator legs

I assembled some grain-related structures out of Rix and Walthers kits.

I assembled several Rix and Walthers kits to add structures to the main grain elevator facilities along the layout. Together with the grain dryer, they form the group of grain-related components that will expand the older elevators, add character, and help establish the layout’s 1980s setting.

The bins and the elevator legs were used on the Anderson’s Grain elevator, while the grain dryer will be used on another elevator I planned to kitbash out of three Walthers elevators.

Grain Dryer

I combined two Walthers “Grain Dryer” kits to build stacked dryers. A few modifications were needed to place one on top of the other, but the process was pretty straightforward. Nothing fancy about the assembly; one dryer can be built in about twenty minutes.

Then, I 3D printed aerators for the grain dryer to further kitbash the Walthers kit. Then, I added BLMA 81 photo etched N scale fan grills to represent the fan grilles and enhance the overall detail.

First, I painted the fans red to add a bit of contrast. Then, I weathered the dryer stack with a Burnt Umber oil paint wash to give it a used and slightly sooty look.

Fertilizer Dealer’s Tanks

I designed and 3D printed a pair of tanks for the Teton Farmers Co-op fertilizer dealer. They will serve as storage for liquid fertilizers and add a bit more operational logic to the scene.

Grain-related Structures by Tully Models

I purchased a few items from Kevin Tully at Tully Models. He produces exceptionally fine-detailed models. I will use the two feed bins and the elevator leg for the Teton Farmers Co-op Feed Mill. Meanwhile, the stacked CMS grain dryer will become part of the Teton Farmers Co-op grain elevator complex.
